Flaming

Flaming !! #@$ What is that ? Some of you might ask. It isn’t a game which we played when we were kids writing FLAMES on the paper and striking off one letter each according to the sum of our names.

Flaming is hostile interaction between Internet users.Sending an offensive or embarrassing message is known as flaming, and it is a problem that plagues virtual communications. This happens when people show less restraint in cyberspace, than if they were face to face.

Yes i did it. I ignored email etiquette rules, and sent someone a email that part of me regrets sending. I had every right to indicate my frustration in the email, but two wrongs don’t make a right.

Speaking from experience, I recommend you stay away from sending or writing anything you might regret later. The next time you feel like sending a flaming email or you receive one, do the following instead:

  • Step away from the computer.
  • If you receive a nasty message-don’t respond immediately. Even when you are responding later write it and save it as draft so that when you cool down even further you might decide not to respond.

Our emotional impulses force us to type some message and hit send before a second thought leads us to hit discard. So we flame. Lesson learnt the hard way. :-(
